Dear Jan

"Thanks for a great ride in Uruguay. We always had good horses, and the pace was excellent with terrain that varied from rolling hills and woods, to wetlands and fast gallops along deserted beaches. The organisation and accommodation were always good with the estancias a particular delight. Looking forward to our next ride with you in Argentina/Chile..."

Best regards,
Terry and Caroline Armstead - Uruguay Estancias Ride, 3 - 11 March 2007.

Volcano Ride

Volcano Ride in Chile

A truly spectacular ride along the shores of the magically beautiful All Saints lake in the Vicente Perez Rosales national park that lies in the shadow of the conical Osorno volcano, emblematic of the picturesque chilean lake district.

This ride consists of between 4 to 7 hours in the saddle each day, though the distance covered in a straight line is only up to 15km due to steep climbs, river crossings and fallen logs in the dense Valdivian rainforest.

The trip starts as a combination with the "Cruce Andino" - the popular frontier lake crossing from Bariloche in Argentina to Puerto Montt in Chile, and makes a natural extension to our Across Patagonia Expedition which will then get you all the way from the Atlantic coast of Patagonia to the Pacific!

You stay at the spectacular old hotel in Peulla on the shores of lake Todos los Santos for the first night before the riding starts. There is also ample opportunity along the ride to swim in the thermal springs that are common here.

Itinerary
Day 1
Board the Cruze Andino catamaran on lake Nahuel Huapi, Bariloche for the start of the frontier crossing to Peulla in Chile. Arrival at Peulla hotel in time for a late lunch. Afternoon free to enjoy the beautiful lakeside location. Dinner and overnight at Peulla Hotel, Chile.

Day 2
You board a small boat for the crossing to El Rincon, where the ride starts. Mount up on your new criollo horse and we ride out into the Vicente Perez Rosales NP, with great views to the backdrop provided by Osorno volcano. In the afternoon we reach the hot springs at Callao. Time for a well earned dip in the thermal springs. Dinner and overnight in a mountain refuge shelter.

Day 3
You continue Northwards in the direction of lake Rupanco. We stop at the beautiful little lake El Queltro for a picnic. Overnight in cabins located on the shores of lake Rupanco.

Day 4
A long memorable days ride with impressive views of the volcanoes Casablanca, Osorno and Puntiagudo, strung out like pearls on a string along the Andes. Overnight at a shelter at the foot of the Osorno volcano.

Day 5
Return ride to lake Rupanco along a new route. We cross dense forest that represents quite a challenge for horse and rider. Overnight and typical chilean dinner in the cabins on the shores of lake Rupanco.

Day 6
You take the morning off. Lunch of smoked trout from the lake. We then cross the lake by boat to el Bolso where a minibus awaits you for the transfer to Puerto Varas or to Puerto Montt. Along the way a last thermal spring beckons you for a dip in the hot waters on the shores of lake Rupanco. End of itinerary.
